Little Gems Nursery

Little Gems Learning Activties

At Sutton on Trent Primary and Nursery School we are extremely proud to have a fabulous and thriving Early Years Class which is very well supported by parents and the local community.

We can take children into our Little Gems Nursery at the beginning of the term following their third birthday. We welcome all children entitled to both 15 and 30 hours, with the option of extending an extra 45 minutes to the end of the whole school day, allowing them to finish at the same time as older siblings in school.

If you wish your child to stay all day (until 2.45pm or 3.30pm) a hot meal can be ordered from our own school kitchen or you can provide a packed lunch if you prefer.

30 hour provision (15 Universal Hours & 15 Extended)

Working parents should use the online HRMC eligibility checking system at www.childcarechoices.gov.uk to obtain an eligibility code for 15 extended hours. If you experience any problems checking your eligibility please contact the Customer Interaction Centre on 0300 123 4097.

Nursery hours:

15 hours provision: Monday to Friday 8.45am - 11.45am

30 hours provision: Monday to Friday 8.45am - 2.45pm (with the option to pay for an extra 45 minutes)

Number of available spaces

In order to comply with legal staffing rations, there is a maximum of 16 places available per morning session and 10 places available each afternoon. Where the demand for places exceeds our capacity, these are allocated directly by the school using Nottinghamshire’s ‘Standard Reception Admissions Criteria’.

If we are unable to offer a place in the term after your child’s 3rd birthday because there are no available spaces, their name will be added to a waiting list. If a space becomes available, priority will be given to those who have been waiting the longest.

Once children are ready to start our Nursery, we have a comprehensive induction program which includes Early Years staff carrying out a home visit when we have the opportunity meet your child in their own environment. We then offer two visit sessions to school before their actual start date.

Our Nursery children work in the same indoor and outside learning environment as our Reception children. In addition to our spacious classroom and outdoor learning area,  we have a fantastic Forest Garden in which children are actively encouraged to explore the natural world. We also have a fire pit area for ‘Wild Learning’ and a greenhouse for growing and gardening.

We are extremely proud of our Little Gems Nursery and how they play such an integral and important part of our very family orientated village school as was recognised in our latest Ofsted Report.

Ofsted May 2023

Children in the early years get off to a flying start. In Nursery, children learn to communicate successfully. They share delight when they find minibeasts under logs. They tell each other: ‘Look, I’ve found a woodlouse.’ In the Reception Year this strong foundation continues.

One parent said: ‘This small school provides a safe and nurturing environment. Self-belief, good behaviour and hard work are actively encouraged.’

Pupils are proud advocates for Sutton-On-Trent Primary and Nursery School. They work and play together happily. Older pupils keep a close eye out for younger pupils and include them in their games. Children from the Nursery class play alongside the rest of the school at lunchtime. They wear high-visibility jackets, so that everyone can take extra care of them.

Visits to school are encouraged. Please contact the school office if you wish to arrange a visit.

If you require any further information please feel free to contact the school office who will be happy to help you.
