Outdoor learning
Sutton-on-Trent Primary and Nursery school is lucky to have the most amazing school grounds including a large field, fantastic play area and a forest garden. Currently all Early Years and Key Stage One pupils learn outside for part of every week and Key Stage Two pupils at least twice each half term.
Outdoor learning at Sutton-on-Trent is varied. Many outdoor lessons will be used to cover the core curriculum. Pupils enjoy a wide range of lessons outdoors, using the environment to support learning in maths, science, geography and more.
Additionally, there are some structured outdoor lessons, which are specifically planned to engage the children in learning about and from their natural environment, as well as building the core skills of resilience, teamwork and problem solving. The Wild Passport lesson plans are used to structure this learning.
Outdoor learning provides pupils with opportunities for exploration, collaboration, supervised risk taking and problem solving. It is also proven to be highly motivating for pupils and beneficial to both their physical and emotional well being. We are continuing to develop our outdoor provision so that all members of the school community can enjoy the benefits.
