Phonics
At Sutton-on-Trent Primary and Nursery school we recognise the importance of high quality daily phonics teaching to provide firm foundations for the development of literacy skills. We use The Department for Education validated full systematic, synthetic Twinkl phonics scheme to deliver phonics to all pupils from Nursery to Year 2. Delivered through the stories and adventures of Kit, Sam and the Twinkl Phonics family, the scheme builds and develops the skills and understanding children need to become effective, independent readers and writers.
Twinkl phonics:
- Provides six levels of dynamic, phonics-centred materials
- Has interactive, direct, daily teaching sessions - promoting active engagement and a multisensory approach
- Ensures a structured approach to learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) - progressing from simple to more complex knowledge and skills
- Is developed by experts
Some pupils in Key stage 2 may also continue to receive phonics teaching to support their reading development.
By following Twinkl Phonics as a whole school approach, we are able to establish a progressive and consistent phonics curriculum where children can meet or exceed age-related expectations.
